Graduate Houses
St Hilda’s Graduate Housing is all off-site. The majority of the accommodation is close to college; along the Iffley and Cowley Roads but there is a new facility at Jack Straws Lane (close to the John Radcliffe Hospital) and a house in North Oxford. All the offsite rooms have internet connections. The houses are all different and it is advisable to choose a house you would like to live in on your accommodation form (sent after you have been accepted).
House descriptions together with rents are found on the college website but the MCR have put together some views from people living in the houses and some photos. You can use Map24 to locate the house. You can write the number and street of the house in the address box on the left hand side and the map will show you its location, you can then zoom out to see where that is relative to town, etc. St Hilda’s itself is in Cowley Place. If you want to “live out” (in private accomodation), the JCR has put together a housing guide [Word document] that you may find useful.
Students who prefer not to live in College accommodation, should consult the University Accommodation Service, which allocates rooms to both singles and couples. These rooms are very cheap and mostly in good locations. There is often, however, a long waiting list so it is advisable to put your name down well in advance, even if you are not sure that you will want University accommodation. The Accommodation Service also helps students find rooms in private shared accommodation and as lodgers.
177 Iffley Road
177 has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, one small kitchen and a shared common room. Room 1 is the smallest bedroom. Located at the front of the house, it is light and sunny with large windows, but is subject to traffic noise. Room 2 is a larger sized room with plenty of storage space: Located at the back of the house with one window looking over the garden, it is relatively peaceful although somewhat dark. Room 3 is situated next to the common room on the top floor of the house. It is a reasonable size, bright and sunny and relatively peaceful. All three rooms have internet access which makes it easy to work at home.
The house shares a common room with 175 Iffley Road and is equipped with
a dining table, chairs and a sofa. There are two bathrooms, one with a
bath,
and one with a shower which is shared with the four occupants of 175 Iffley.
The kitchen is rather small but is fully equipped with hob, oven, microwave
and refrigerator. The freezer is located upstairs next to the common room
and housemates have access to the free washer/drier in 175.
175 Iffley Road
Although the house is slightly out of the town centre (approx. a 7 minute bike ride or 20 minute walk, or a 10-15 minute walk to college) it is well-situated: it is right opposite the University gym and sports-grounds, and very close to Cowley Road; where clubs, pubs, restaurants and Tescos (supermarket) are situated. It is also relatively close to the college boathouse for those interested in rowing. It is right opposite a bus stop and a minute's walk from a pub, corner shop and Chinese take-away. The common room is on the top floor.
87 Iffley Road
87 Iffley Rd. has seven bedrooms (all ethernet-connected), a shower (with
lovely water pressure), two bathrooms, and two kitchens. Five of the bedrooms
are generously sized, and the two bedrooms on the top floor are smaller,
but very conveniently placed by the shower and the small third-floor kitchen.
The house is actually connected to 85 Iffley and shares a garden with Stockmore
House, so the community is quite large and very friendly. Half of the rooms
face the street, and half face the
quieter
garden (where a fabulous apple tree bears fruit all fall). The house is
extremely well located, being close to Tesco's, the college, a number of
pubs, thrift stores, and the Cowley Road bars.
85 Iffley Road
85 Iffley Road is a great house to live in, we are located directly across from the University gym, so we have easy access to the gym and can watch many sporting events from the comfort of our rooms. The community of 6 people living in our house is great. The backyard is also attached to the other Hilda’s houses and is filled with several apple trees, which is making all of us look forward to the warmer months so that we can enjoy each others company in out door barbeques!! All in all it is a great place to live since it is only a five minute walk away from St Hilda’s!
Stockmore House (46 Stockmore Street)
Situated
in the Plain, between the bustling Cowley and Iffley roads, Stockmore House
is a big red-bricked warm, friendly graduate house for St Hilda's graduates.
It is about 2 minute walk from college and 10 minutes from the City Centre.
There are five self-contained sharing flats for two people each, with two
bedrooms and common bath and kitchen. Rooms are largish and cosy, and rent
reasonable. All students have access to washing machine, dryer (when it's
working!), common room for entertaining, bike sheds and the backyard for
the cook-outs and barbeques.
Advantages: Cheap, good location, close to town, privacy (sharing with two people instead of twenty!), homely and friendly environment. Disadvantages: Old house, dryer doesn't always work, close to Cowley road and vulnerable to the occasional burglary. Overall: Warm, friendly fun house to live in, but keep your wits about you!
25 Alma Place
Alma Place is a cosy house, with a nice atmosphere. It has a little garden at the back and plenty of room for bike storage at the front. The shared kitchen is big enough for most people to be in at once, but can get crowded if all six people and their friends are there! There are two toilets and one shower, which has plenty of hot and high-pressure water. The kitchen has a lovely new fridge and microwave/grill as well as a gas cooker and oven, kettle, toaster and a table. All rooms are nice, but the inhabitant of room 5 gets two smaller rooms at the opposite ends of the house from one another. Rooms 1 and 4 face over the street and the others face over the garden. Rooms 2 and 3 have their own sink. Room 2 has doors that open into the garden, but can be a bit noisy as it is near the kitchen. Room 6 is loft-style and is newly decorated. The other rooms and the communal areas are a bit scruffy, so be warned! However the house is very warm, and makes a welcoming home away from home.
19 Tyndale Road
A
small house on a quiet street off of Cowley Road , 19 Tyndale accommodates
3 grads in cosy fashion. Although Tyndale Road is mainly residential, it
is also home to a church at the dead end, a community mosque at one corner,
and a small parking lot for a Halal market on the other corner. Rooms 1 & 2
are quite spacious with large windows facing the street, although only room
2 on the first floor has a small built-in closet while room 1 on the ground
floor features built-in shelves and bay windows. Room 3 on the first floor
is adjacent to the bathroom and smaller, but offers a view of the garden
and is the most insulated from street noise. All the rooms feature decorative
fireplaces now in disuse. The kitchen is quite small but has a door to the
garden and the adjoining common room provides homey dining and lounge space.
Cabinets in the common room and the basement also offer extra storage space.
Dorothea Beale House (Jack Straws Lane)
The house has two stories, with one bedroom on the ground floor, and the rest on the second floor. Located in Marston, close to the Sciences area and the John Radcliffe hospital, it is in a quieter neighbourhood of Oxford than the rest of the housing.
Inside, the house boasts 2 lovely brand-new kitchens, with multiple places
to
cook and individual cupboards. The second kitchen also contains 2 washers
and dryers. All of the rooms are newly renovated, although most are different
sizes.
The lifestyle at Jack Straws is great, but you have to be prepared to walk/ride your bike up a lengthy hill, and the buses stop at midnight going out here, so often you have to arrange for alternative transportation or ride your cycle in the dark to get home later at night. There is also an upper common room at JSL, which provides another place to sit and study quietly. And if that isn't enough, you have your very own garden outside to sit in when the weather gets warm. In short, JSL is a great place to live, just be prepared for some downfalls with room sizes, the method of transportation to get here (you definitely need a bike), and it is a fair distance from any larger sized grocery store.
22 Carlton Road
Sonia Li
The property on Carlton Road is a lovely house, being a good size for three people. It is overseen by the 'landlord' next door, who is very amiable, and helpful too. Being so far from college, there is some sense of isolation. It is, however, very close to the bus routes going along Banbury Road, and so only a hop away from Summertown and the shops.
